Las Flores
Las Flores is a small Mexican restaurant on the corner Main and E Hamlin. The small restaurant has two entries, one on the side and one in the front, that leads into an open space with tables and a counter with chairs. The walls are painted red and yellow, with green accents such as the chairs and decorations, and the place was fairly clean. There were few people, and only one waiter at the front, the others in the kitchen. The music was louder than it would normally be in a restaurant, but didn’t pull away from the pleasant feel of the place.
The waiter—a nice man with a strong mexican accent—took our drinks and attended other customers while we looked over the menu. The prices were cheap, with the highest thing on our receipt being $8.00. The menu was decorative, and laminated, but didn’t have many options, although you could get your options in a variety of ways, from the meat to the tortilla. We ordered chips and salsa, along with guacamole, a quesadilla for myself, two nachos for my mom and grandmother, a fully loaded burrito for my dad, and tamales.
The food came quick, the chips and dip being the first to come out. The chips were hard, almost as if stale, and the salsa was bland, with the only way of getting flavor from the mild one being if you get a piece of cilantro from the little cup they put it in. The hot salsa had very little flavor as well, with no real heat to it at all, except the strong flavor of lime without the sourness. The guacamole had flavor to it, mostly lime, but still had flavor—then again I have no other experience to compare it to— and I was surprised it was had flavor, but it was a nice surprise.
It was a short amount of time before the food came, with it only being around 10 minutes, possibly a little over. The quesadilla was good, the meat(ground beef) being flavorful, the tortilla being crispy, and the cheese adding a subtle but noticeable addition to the flavor of the food. I had a bite of the nachos, the chicken was well cooked, my mom suggesting it may have been in a slow cooker, and was well seasoned. The tamales were dry, but then again a lot are, and were quite bland, with no real flavor coming through beside corn. The burrito was delicious as well, with the flavor of the meat, rice, sauce, and other ingredients mixing well to make a flavorful dish.
It was over all a relatively good place for a small restaurant, and I wouldn’t mind going again.
